When he arrived home from work, Ryo looked like he was tired and not in a very good mood. He’d probably had a hard day at work, so it might not be the best time for Bikky to tell him, but at the same time, if he didn’t tell his foster father his side of the story, and Ryo found out from someone else… That would most likely be worse.
Bikky followed his foster father into the kitchen, where Ryo was filling the kettle to make tea. “Ryo?”
“Yes, Bikky?”
The boy shuffled bare feet on the cool floor tiles, not sure how to broach the subject. He didn’t want to be yelled at. Ryo almost never yelled, only if Bikky did something really bad, or put himself in danger, but if he was already annoyed, that made yelling more likely, even though he’d probably apologise for it later. Bikky was still getting used to the idea of an adult apologising to him.
Ryo turned to look at him when he didn’t answer. Bikky dropped his gaze to the floor, as if studying his bare toes.
“I got in trouble today at school, but it wasn’t my fault, honest! I didn’t do anything!”
Pulling out a chair, Ryo sat down at the kitchen table. “What happened?”
“The hallway was crowded, everyone was bumping into each other, pushing and shoving, and my backpack got caught on something, so I pulled on it, but maybe I should’ve looked first, ‘cause it must’ve been caught on this girl’s bag, and she fell over, and she told the teacher I tripped her on purpose, but I didn’t even see her, and I tried to explain, but nobody would listen, and I got sent to the principal’s office, and he’ll probably call you, and I wanted you to know I didn’t really DO anything, it was just an accident, and…” Bikky ran out of breath and stared worriedly at Ryo, who was slumped over the kitchen table, shaking. “Ryo? Are you okay?”
Ryo sat up, wiping away tears of laughter. “I’m fine, Biks. I thought I’d had a bad day, but it sounds as if yours was even worse than mine. I think we both need cheering up. Why don’t I order pizza for dinner? And I’ll talk to the principal tomorrow, explain what really happened. Just try to be more careful, okay?”
“Thanks, Ryo.”
