Summary: It’s always best to have a tactical advantage.

The Doctor has never approved of violence, he’d prefer to talk his way out of trouble where possible, because discussions are more productive, and generally less messy. Violence usually results in destruction of property, injury, or even death, and that’s just wasteful.
 

Nevertheless, disliking violence does not mean that he’s incapable of defending himself, and his companions, if the need should arise. He just does his best to avoid the necessity.
 

Besides, as everyone knows, if you get the offence right, sometimes defence isn’t required. Go in with enough confidence, and people will assume they’ve already been defeated. Saves trouble.

Offence? Is the Doctor offensive? Clever and surprising for sure, but offensive?

As opposed to defence, like in football. Not as in offending people, although he does occasionally, just going on the offensive. Why is English such a contrary language?
