Searching for a missing child was one of the most stressful assignments for any police officer, whether in uniform or plainclothes. When a minor went missing, everyone who could be spared got roped in to help, whether they were on duty or not, because the first twenty-four hours were crucial. The longer it took to find a child, the less likely it was that they’d be found alive.
Officers were going door to door in the neighbourhood where the missing three-year-old lived. He’d been playing in the garden when the child minder had gone indoors to change the baby, and when she’d come outside again ten minutes later, he’d been gone. In a state of panic, she’d searched the house from top to bottom, then called the parents, and the police.
“Where was he when you last saw him?” Ryo asked the distraught woman.
“Playing in the sandpit!” she replied, wringing her hands. “I told him to stay right there while I took care of his sister…”
“And you searched everywhere?”
“Every room in the house.”
“What about out here?”
Fifteen minutes later, the child was found, underneath the back porch, fast asleep.
Sometimes, missing persons weren’t missing at all.
