Lounging on a towel spread on golden sand, his lover beside him clad only in skimpy swimming trunks that left little to the imagination, Dee watched through half-closed eyes as the sea crept up the wet sand at the water’s edge in a series of small wavelets, hardly more than ripples.
The only sounds were the lapping of the slowly incoming tide, the rustle of palm fronds in the warm breeze, and the occasional call of a seabird. Life had never felt more perfect. He took another sip from his drink, the ice tinkling, and the cold glass sweating against his palm, and studied his partner, face down on a plaid picnic blanket, nose in a book, toes digging into the sand, occasionally helping himself to a grape from a dish. There wasn’t another living soul around.
“Dee?”
Rolling towards his lover, Dee reached for him. “Yeah, baby?” But the blanket beside him was empty and the blue sky had turned grey. He frowned.
“Dee!” Someone was shaking him.
“Whu?”
“Wake up! We’ll be late for work!”
Dee blinked, peering owlishly up at Ryo. “Dammit, you woke me outta the best dream ever!”
“What about?”
Dee sighed. “I don’t remember.”
