Investigating abductions was part of the Serious Crimes Unit’s job, but it was something no detective particularly wanted to deal with. They had to be handled both delicately and discreetly, so the kidnappers wouldn’t know the police were involved. That wasn’t the only complication, of course. Distraught family members willing to do anything to get their loved one back could behave unpredictably, and weren’t always willing to listen to reason.
To make matters worse, rescuing kidnap victims was never guaranteed. Even if the family was willing to pay the ransom, even if they followed the abductor’s instructions to the letter, there was never any assurance that the victim was still alive, or that they’d be released once the money had been delivered to the drop. No matter how careful the police and the family were, there were too many things that could go wrong.
“How’d we get mixed up in this anyway?” Dee muttered.
“You took the call.” The case had landed right in their laps; it wasn’t as if they could have said, ‘Sorry, you’ll have to call someone else.’
“Yeah, wishin’ I’d just let the phone keep ringin’.”
“Dee! How can you say that?”
“It’s a dog, Ryo! The kidnappers didn’t take someone’s kid; they took a frickin’ dog!”
“It’s not just any dog, Dee; it’s a pedigree Lowchen. Do you have any idea how rare they are? Not to mention expensive to buy.”
“I don’t even like dogs!”
“We still have to get this one back alive.”
The End
