‘It’s just a summer fling.’ That was what Ryo kept telling himself, over and over again. He’d have fun, take a chance, do all the things he would never normally allow himself to do, because no one here in Hawaii was likely to recognise him; he was just another American tourist, one among hundreds. Without his trademark black Stetson, no one ever recognised him as CMA Entertainer of the Year Randy Lane. On this vacation, he was just Ryo Maclean, ex-army Sergeant, currently between gigs, and so…

For the first time in his life, he had what felt like a safe opportunity to explore his sexuality without it messing up his life or his career. Not that he’d been expecting any such thing to happen, not when he’d planned this vacation, or even when he’d stepped off the plane, and if he’d been paying more attention to where he was going, none of this would be happening, but… Tripping over someone’s suitcase and falling, quite literally, into the arms of New York Detective Dee laytner had changed everything.

As far as Dee was concerned, it was fate, destiny, the will of the universe, or something like that, and four days into their vacation, Ryo had turned in the key to his third-floor hotel room without ever having entered it. What was the point of taking up a room someone else could use when he wasn’t using it himself? Ever since they’d arrived, they’d slept in Dee’s room on the second floor, because… weird though it might sound, it just felt right.

Nothing had happened the first night, or the second, except for some quite passionate kissing. The third night had been a bit more adventurous, as had the fourth, and on the sixth morning, Ryo had been walking a bit funny, but that had been fine. It hadn’t kept him and Dee from spending the day doing every touristy thing they could think of, and then some. Already they’d been swimming, horseback riding – something Ryo was experienced at but Dee had never done before – tried their hand at surfing, taken long walks and bus tours, been snorkelling, signed up for scuba diving lessons, been to beach parties and luaus, visited a volcano, taken a couple of trips to neighbouring islands… All of that in just the first week!

Everything it was possible to do in Hawaii, they wanted to try, and while things didn’t always go to plan, they’d laughed so much that Ryo’s ribs hurt. It was a good thing he’d have a couple of weeks to recover from his vacation before embarking on his next tour, which looked like it would take him just about everywhere EXCEPT Hawaii, because if he and Dee kept up the pace with their island adventures, he was going to be beyond exhausted when the three weeks came to an end.

But Ryo didn’t want to think about that. In fact, he put it out of his mind as much as possible. Even so, he was keenly aware that the first week of his vacation was already behind him; there were less than two weeks to go, and it wasn’t going to be anywhere near enough, but it would have to be. It was all they could have, because…

Dee didn’t know who he was, and after sharing a hotel room and a bed for over a week, Ryo could hardly turn to him and say, “Oh, by the way, I’m not really who you think I am, I’m actually an internationally famous country singer, taking a short break before going on tour, but don’t tell anyone.”

Not that he thought for a second that Dee would go running to the nearest reporter to spill his tale of shacking up for several weeks with a celebrity who was still in the closet. Dee had too much integrity to do anything so underhand. But the fact that Ryo had lied to him might put a damper on the rest of the vacation, and the last thing Ryo wanted was to ruin things when they were both having such a great time. In years to come, he wanted to be able to look back on this vacation and only remember how wonderful it had been.

Besides Ryo hadn’t really lied to Dee, except maybe by omission. His real name was indeed Randy Ryo Maclean; Randy Lane was his stage name, caused by a typo when he’d taken part in the songwriting contest three years ago that had unexpectedly resulted in him landing a record deal. He’d been billed as Randy Mac Lane, and… Well, he’d dropped the Mac part but kept the rest, because he was hardly the first person to perform under a name different from the one he was born with. There was nothing illegal about it, and he could still travel as himself whenever he wanted to, which he often did. There was a lot to be said for being able to go places without having fans flocking around him wanting autographs and photographs.

Nevertheless, he’d kept one significant aspect of his life secret from Dee, and maybe that had been a mistake, but if that was the case, it was already too late to fix it by coming clean, and when this vacation was over, he and Dee would go their separate ways: Dee back to New York and his job with the NYPD, and Ryo back to Nashville, to get ready for his upcoming international tour. Europe, Japan, Australia… It was going to be a gruelling five months, travelling with his backing band, but he was looking forward to it. Just like this vacation, he was intent on savoring every moment, because although he was riding the crest of a wave right now, he was well aware that could change at any moment. Three years at the top was more than he’d ever expected. Relatively few singers lasted even that long, and fewer still could boast careers measured in decades.

The coming tour could end up being a flop, even though, according to his manager, it had sold out so fast that more shows and public appearances had been added in a futile effort to keep up with demand. Even despite all that, his next album might be a flop, fans might start losing interest in his music, a new singer might come along that the fans liked better, a fresh face with a different style and catchier songs. Ryo couldn’t take anything for granted in his career, but he didn’t want to sabotage it either, by getting himself accidentally outed as gay. Nashville could be very conservative. Why did life have to be so complicated?

So, Dee would never know that his summer fling happened to be famous, and when their vacation ended and they went back to their lives, they’d be in different cities, in different states, more than seven hundred miles apart, and that was by the shortest possible route. They wouldn’t even be in the same time zone. It was too far to ever expect to continue what they’d started here, no matter how much they both might wish they could.

The reality was that when they left here, they’d never see each other again, and in time, all of this would be just a distant memory. Maybe they’d think about each other from time to time, but in the end, Dee would meet someone else and… Ryo shied away from that thought; he didn’t like thinking of Dee with some other person, even though he knew it was bound to happen.

‘Focus on now, don’t think about the future,’ he told himself. ‘Make the most of every minute you have with him, make as many memories as you can, and take pictures. Lots of pictures, so you never have to forget.’

“Mornin’, babe,” said Dee, rolling over in bed and breaking into Ryo’s thoughts. “I can hear you thinkin’ from way over here. So, what’re we gonna do today?”

Ryo turned to face his… lover? Was that the right term? “Isn’t it your turn to pick?”

“I dunno, I’ve lost track. What haven’t we tried yet?”

A blush heated Ryo’s face as their previous night’s activities came to mind and he hoped the hotel room was dim enough with the curtains closed that Dee couldn’t tell. “Maybe we should check the brochures. What time is it?”

Dee checked his wristwatch. “Just after eight.” He snickered. “Damn, that’s early for me when it’s not even a workday. Normally I’d be sleepin’ ‘til noon every day of my vacation, but sleepin’ just feels like wastin’ time. Hawaii’s like a once in a lifetime thing, and I don’t wanna waste a second of bein’ with you.” He leaned in for a kiss.

Ryo smiled against Dee’s lips. “Why don’t we just grab breakfast and then see where the day takes us?”

“Ooh, random and spontaneous, I can work with that.”

That drew a chuckle from Ryo, his gloomy thoughts of earlier swept away on a tide of happiness. “Doofus!”

The rest of their vacation was sure to fly by just as quickly as the first week had, but it wasn’t over yet; they still had twelve more days to pack in enough memories to last them both a lifetime, starting right now. Whatever they did today, it would be wonderful, another memory he’d never forget.

The End - For the moment.
