FAKE Ficlet: Gooseberry

Summary: Bikky gets home from camp to find that things between Ryo and Dee have changed.

Written For: My own prompt ‘Any, any, Playing gooseberry,’ at fic_promptly.

Bikky doesn't know what happened between Ryo and Dee while he was away, and to be honest, he really doesn’t want to know the details. Whatever it was, things have changed and it’s pretty obvious that somehow Dee's finally got what he wanted from Bikky’s foster father.

The funny thing is, Bikky’s always believed that once the perv had his way with Ryo he’d lose interest, but that’s not the case. If anything, he seems even more eager than before to hang around and Bikky can’t pretend to be happy about that, even though Ryo seems more relaxed and content than Bikky’s ever seen him.

The perv was already here when Bikky got back, and it looks like he plans on staying, at least for the evening. But this is Bikky’s home too, and while he might not be able to make Dee leave if Ryo doesn’t want him to, that doesn’t mean he’s completely powerless. Dee’s not getting everything his own way.

Dinner’s the same as it always is when Dee invites himself over, with insults flying back and forth across the table while Ryo tries to keep the peace. After dinner, there’s a ball game on TV, so they get the dishes washed and put away as fast as possible, the three of them working together because Bikky’s not about to leave Dee and Ryo alone together in the kitchen. Not that Ryo is likely to do anything he shouldn’t, but Dee can’t be trusted not to take advantage of the smallest opportunity.

Dishes done, they head for the sofa, and Bikky plunks himself down right in the middle so that Dee and Ryo have no choice but to sit at opposite ends. That way he can keep Dee from pouncing, and there’s zero chance of any kind of touching. Dee glares at him, his expression promising dire retribution if he can get away with it, but on Bikky’s other side, Ryo looks more amused than annoyed.

“Are we watching the game or not?” Bikky asks, the picture of innocence. He knows he’s not fooling anyone, but it doesn’t matter. He’s just a kid, and there are some things he shouldn’t be subjected to, like two grown men making out in front of him, so he’ll just keep playing gooseberry and make sure that at least when he’s present, the men in question will have to behave like adults.

Some American teenagers apparently don't know geography *rolls yes* I know it's a foreign country to them, but even in my teens I knew a fair bit of American geography. I used to know all the state capitals but I've forgotten most of that now, lol! Dad bought me an atlas when I was a kid.

Geography was never my best thing. We're not really taught much of it. As pretty much any newscast will tell you, this is a pretty self-centered country. Most people can tell you more about the Kardashians or about Trump's campaign than about foreign capitals, etc. :-/ (Personally, I'll take Welsh geography over American reality TV or politics any day of the week!)

Anything is better than reality TV or politics, two of the most irritating things on the planet =/

I've watched a lot of American TV over the years, so I've looked up a lot of places to find out where they are. Same with books set in the States. It helps to give me a feel for the place.

That's good. Now, if only these kids would do the same. Research is not just for term papers. Besides, it's fun!

Sometimes it's fun - sometimes it's a pain. I have a love/hate relationship with research o_O

Yeah, there are times when it can be a nuisance. I gave myself a headache once looking up cloning techniques, just because I could barely understand any of it; it might as well all have been written in Sanskrit, for all of its comprehensibility. And scrolling can make me so dizzy. But a chance to learn something new is something I'm always going to welcome, whether I end up using it in a fic or not. :)

What gets me is when I'm trying to find out something specific but my googling skills fail. I go through page after page and still can't find what I want to know and it all ends up[ being a giant waste of time I could have spent writing =(

That part's a pain, yeah. I've been lucky; that doesn't happen to me too often, but it has now and then. When that happens, all I can do is wing it and hope nobody calls me on it, lol. The cloning thing, I finally gave up because it was a thousand miles over my head, and I copped out by having the characters talk about it while it was happening elsewhere, rather than showing it happen.

That sounds like a sensible workaround.

My research fails to turn up what I want at least half the time, probably more. My google sills are limited, so I usually have to make my best guess. No one's complained so far, thankfully.

It usually works; I know just enough about certain things that I can fake it, I think.

Wow. I use ask.com instead of Google, if I can't find what I need on Wikipedia. For some reason, I have better luck with it than with other search engines.

I'll have to try that. I'm not very computer savvy so I just automatically go for google and never even think of other resources I could try. o_O
