Summary: Jack and Ianto watch TV at Christmas.

It’s Christmas Day. Slouched on the comfy sofa in Ianto’s flat, he and Jack are too stuffed from dinner to even contemplate moving. Jack picks up the remote and flicks the TV on for the BBC news, followed by the Queen’s speech, but closes his eyes and yawns, paying no attention to what’s on the screen.


“Huh,” says Ianto. “London’s being invaded by aliens again.”


“Of course it is; it’s Christmas,” Jack replies. “Not our problem though. The Doctor and UNIT can handle it.”


“You know the best thing about Christmas?”


“Presents?”


“No. It’s not having to save the world.”

The poor Doctor always gets stuck having to deal with Christmas aliens! That's beyond not fair.

But it's only a few days a year whereas Torchwood are on duty 24/7 throughout the whole year. They deserve one day off. Besides, it's a three-hour drive to London from Cardiff easily, even without the traffic chaos an invasion attempt would cause. By the time they got there, it would probably be over.

Yeah, good point. And then there are all the things that happen that the Doctor never gets involved in. (I'll always wonder what he was up to during 'Miracle Day'.)

I think MD and CoE were in alternate universes. In the MD universe there's no Doctor, because there's no way he wouldn't have been there. Torchwood worked for the first two seasons because they weren't dealing with global threats. As soon as RTD tried to up the stakes everything fell apart because the Doctor's absence wasn't believable.
