“Stop! Thief! Somebody stop him; he took my purse!”

Ryo had only just come off shift and had decided to pick up groceries on his way home. Having a growing son, especially one who was shooting up as fast as Bikky was, meant that grocery shopping had to be done several times a week to keep pace with the boy’s constant demands for food.

But being a cop meant that even off-duty, he was alert to crimes being committed. The woman’s shout stopped him in his tracks, and as he turned to see what was happening, a skinny youth cannoned into him.

His instincts, honed by years of police work, both in uniform and, more recently, as a plainclothes detective, kicked in; kids like this one didn’t usually carry designer purses, so if a purse-snatcher was about, this was the likely culprit. Reflexes born of Ryo’s training in karate took over; a quick grab, a foot hooked around an ankle, a twist, and the youth was pinned against the wall.

“Police, you’re under arrest.” Ryo quickly read his captive his rights as he applied the handcuffs.

The woman whose purse had been snatched trotted up, panting from the exertion.

“My goodness that was fast! And people say there’s never a cop around when you need one! Thank you so much!”

“Just doing my job. Do you want to press charges?”

“What will happen if I do?”

“You’ll have to come to the precinct and swear out a complaint. We’ll charge the thief, see if he’s got a record or any outstanding warrants against him, he’ll probably spend the night in holding and be arraigned in the morning, pending a court date.”

“Alright, yes, I’m pressing charges. He shouldn’t get away with this.”

Ryo sighed. So much for the grocery shopping.
