Jack always impressed on new recruits the fact that Torchwood was a dangerous place to work. The team were up against everything the rest of the universe could throw at them, whether that was vicious alien creatures and unknown, potentially lethal objects falling through the Rift, or some of the more hostile, and usually more technologically advanced, races deciding to conquer the ‘primitive’ people of earth for nefarious purposes.

 
Even objects from earth’s past could prove hazardous to a Torchwood agent’s health, as evidenced by the outbreak of bubonic plague some years previously, caused by an infected individual being brought forwards in time.

 
Then there was the possibility of unexploded bombs being plucked from past wars and dropped on Cardiff, not to mention the occasional arrival of a dinosaur or two. It wasn’t only velociraptors and t-rex that needed to be treated with caution; even the herbivorous species could cause death and destruction. All it took was a careless swing of a muscular tail, or an immense foot stepping on someone.

 
But in Ianto’s opinion, despite Jack’s wise warnings regarding the dangers of the job, there was one he always overlooked: filing. Paper was surprisingly sharp, and paper cuts hurt.
