“You’re late,” Jack said as Ianto came into his office, a cardboard box tucked under one arm, and a carrier bag in his other hand.

“I had some errands to run, you know that; I called to tell you I’d be late.”

“You’re later than late then. You said you should be in by ten at the latest, and it’s just after eleven. I’ve had to send Gwen across the Plas for coffee twice.”

Ianto dumped his bag down on the floor. “I said I’d try to be in by ten. Unfortunately, there was a packed waiting room, and I didn’t have an appointment. Now shut up. Here.” One-handed, Ianto scooped something out of the box he was holding and plopped it down on top of Jack’s paperwork. “Don’t say I never give you anything.” With that, he spun on his heel and left Jack’s office, leaving Jack staring into a pair of amber eyes.

Predictably, Jack’s heart melted, and he scooped up the charcoal grey bundle of fluff. “Well, hello there. Where did you come from?” Getting to his feet, kitten cradled against his chest, Jack moved to the door of his office, watching as Ianto reached Gwen’s desk, depositing another something from his box in front of her.

“One for you.”

A black kitten with green eyes batted tentatively at Gwen’s hair as Ianto moved on to Tosh’s workstation.

“This one’s yours, Tosh.” He plunked a black kitten with white paws on her lap before turning to Owen, who was playing computer games. “Here, complementary free kitten.” He held out a bundle of marmalade fur. “Stroppy redhead for a stroppy Londoner.”

Owen just stared. “What do I want with a kitten?”

Ianto rolled his eyes. “Just take it, Owen. There’s five of them and five of us, and I’m not doing double kitten duty. One each seems fair. Nobody else is complaining.” He shoved the kitten at Owen, who grabbed it before it could be dropped on his keyboard.

“I don’t know anything about kittens!”

“You’ll learn. Don’t worry, I had them examined and vaccinated, and I’ve got all the essentials for them. Left the bag up in Jack’s office. Also took the liberty of booking them in for neutering. All you have to do is give yours a name and remember to feed it.” So saying, Ianto took the last kitten, a fluffy grey with a white tummy and paws, out of the box and set in on his shoulder. It had spent the drive to the Hub there anyway.

“Where did they come from?” Tosh didn’t look up as she dangled a length of ribbon for her kitten to play with.

“I’d like to know that too,” Jack said, coming down the steps from his office, his kitten now tucked inside his shirt with only the head poking out.

“Found the boxful in the recycling bin this morning when I put my rubbish out,” Ianto explained. “So I’m recycling them.”

That was how Torchwood got kittens.

That's just what the Hub needs, kittens, the perfect stress reliever! As long as Myfanwy doesn't eat them... It's so wonderful Ianto saved them. Humans are so inhuman sometimes.
