“Hey,” Dee said when Ryo answered his door. “Are ya busy? I mean, I don’t wanna bother ya if y’are.”
Ryo was, in fact, very busy; he had a laundry load going down in the basement laundry room, another load already done, dried, and waiting to be pressed, a task he’d been just about to start, and he knew he really ought to clean the bathroom, and yet…
He stepped aside, letting his partner in. “There’s nothing that can’t wait a while longer. What’s up?”
“I dunno, nothin’ really.” Dee sighed. “I guess this case is kinda gettin’ to me.”
The two detectives had four open cases they were currently working, but Dee didn’t have to specify which one he was talking about. Ryo knew it was the latest one, the murder of a teenager, gunned down in an alleyway.
“I know it hits close to home for you.” Ryo led the way over to the sofa, sitting down and patting the seat beside him.
Dee flopped down, looking tired and strained. “Just reminds me of Arnon, y’know? Every time I think about it, look at the crime scene photos, I don’t see the dead kid, I see my friend. There was nothin’ I could’a done to save Arnon, I know that, but…”
“It still haunts you; I know.”
“Yeah, you do.” Dee knew Ryo felt the same way about his parents’ deaths. Knowing that you couldn’t have done anything to prevent what happened didn’t lessen the grief or erase the feelings of guilt for not being there and at least trying.
“We could hand this case over to someone else if it’s too much.”
Dee shook his head. “No, I don’t wanna do that. It would feel like I was betrayin’ Arnon all over again. I wasn’t there when he needed me, couldn’t even avenge his death, but I can sure as hell do whatever it takes to get the bastard who took this kid’s life, make sure he never gets the chance to do it again.”
“We’ll do it together.”
“Thanks, babe.”
“We’re partners; it’s what we do.”
