JJ was as shocked as Drake to learn that Dee and Ryo were married. “I thought we were all friends! Why didn’t you tell us?”

“Uh, because we didn’t want to,” Dee replied. “No offence, but the only people we’ve told are family: Bikky and Carol, Mother, and Ryo’s aunt and uncle.”

“But if I’d known, I would have gotten you guys a wedding present! I bet nobody else gave you anything.”

Ryo shrugged. “We didn’t want gifts, and anyway, there wasn’t anything we needed. It’s not like we were just setting up home together when we got married; we got the flat exactly how we wanted it before I even moved in, and we sent a ton of stuff we didn’t have room for to the Goodwill store. What was the point of cluttering the place up with things we’d never use?”

“But wedding presents are traditional!” JJ protested.

“Okay, so what d’you want for your wedding? Are you going to set up a registry?”

JJ frowned, thinking of the apartment he and Drake shared. “Um, we sort of already have everything. Oh dear, our families are all going to be expecting to give us something; they’ll be upset if we tell them there’s nothing we want.” He turned to his fiancé. “What are we going to do, Drakey?”

“I’ve got no idea, but the last thing we need is to let my family just choose gifts themselves. Not if you don’t want to get stuck with a tacky lace tablecloth, or a plaster bust of Elvis.”

“They wouldn’t!”

“Some of my cousins might,” Drake said gloomily. “Eloping is starting to sound like a very good idea.”

“We can’t do that! Not that there’s anything wrong with eloping, but my sisters would never forgive me!”

“I have a suggestion,” Ryo cut in. “Maybe you could ask all your guests to contribute their favourite recipe, make a kind of family cookbook.”

JJ’s eyes lit up. “That’s a great idea! It’s personal, practical, and fun! There’s just one problem left to solve.”

“What’s that?” Dee asked.

“Our wedding present to you.”
