What hurt so much wasn’t that Jack had left, because Ianto had known he was waiting for the Doctor. No, what cut to the quick was that he hadn’t bothered to say goodbye, not to any of the team, not even Gwen who’d been right there in the Hub with him at the time.

He could have left a note, sent an email, or a text, anything at all to let them know he was going, and whether or not he was planning on coming back. But there’d been nothing, Jack probably hadn’t even given them a second thought. Did they mean so little to him?

It might have been easier if Ianto could have felt anger over the way Jack had kissed him before swanning off, but he couldn’t summon the energy. What right did any of them have to be angry with the Captain after the way they’d betrayed him?

This was no more than they deserved. Just because Jack had forgiven them didn’t mean he wasn’t still hurt. They’d openly defied him, disobeyed orders, and brought catastrophe down on Cardiff. Now they’d have to live with the results.

It was a harsh way to learn their lesson.
