Summary: Jack has lost too many people already.

Saying goodbye never got any easier, no matter how many times Jack was faced with it, and he’d already endured loss more times than anyone should have to. His father and mother, his best friend growing up, colleagues and friends at the Time Agency, soldiers and pilots he’d served with during wartime, his wife and unborn child, victims of a flu epidemic, lovers of both genders, countless fellow Torchwood agents… The list went on and on.

 
Now here he was, saying goodbye again, this time to someone who shouldn’t have died, someone he’d failed to protect, someone whose life had been ripped away by beings of unimaginable power as a warning to him not to interfere in their business.

 
He knew some people would just shrug and say she was an old lady who’d already lived a good life, like that made it any better at all. It didn’t. She’d been a kind, gentle soul who’d deserved so much better than to die cold and alone in the middle of an unnatural storm. He wished he’d at least been with her, to tell her she was loved, more than she knew.

 
“I’m so sorry, Estelle. You paid for my mistakes.”
