Ryo ran steadily, feeling the muscles in his legs burn but paying little attention to the discomfort. He was breathing well, and he felt strong, even if this uphill stretch was a bit of a strain.

There was less than a month now until the New York marathon, and his training had been going well, building up muscle, improving his stamina and overall fitness. Today’s run was approximately fifteen miles, more than half the marathon distance, and he didn’t have much further to go, yet he wasn’t feeling overly tired. That was good.

The actual marathon would be another matter, running with hundreds of other people, probably getting jostled at the start before the field started to spread out, but as long as he paced himself, he thought he had a good chance of completing the run, maybe even finishing in a not too shabby time. The weather should be pleasantly cool for the race, he was just hoping it would be dry. Running in the rain wouldn’t be pleasant, and there was always the risk of slipping on wet leaves.

He picked up the pace, the burn in his legs increasing. He could hardly wait for the big day!

Our niece runs marathons and travels to do so. I've never been a runner and now with my physical problems, I never will be. Not that my doctor would want me to run. One of my former coworkers was attempting Couch-to-5K and he told her not to do it. I'm not exactly sure of his reasoning; she seemed to think he thought she was too old for it, but I know folks late in life still participate in running as a sport.
