Summary: The universe is dying, but some people aren’t ready to give up.

Even out at the edge of the universe, the sky should have shown a scattering of stars, but there was nothing, not a single pinpoint of light in the heavens, not one sun shining down on a distant world.
Across the vastness of space, every last one had either burned out completely or simply grown too dim to be seen by the naked eye. This was the end of everything, perhaps the last remaining inhabitable planet where people struggled to survive long enough to escape.
There was nowhere left to run to, but the Doctor admired their determination to survive.
