“So, where are we going?” Ryo asked, sliding into the passenger seat. He and Dee had the day off, although they hadn’t made specific plans.
“No idea.” Dee grinned. “Somewhere that isn’t here? I figured we’d just start drivin’ and see where we end up.”
“Mystery tour?”
“Why not? Once we’re outta the city, we can pick a direction and just go. If we get lost, there’s a map in the glovebox.”
Laughing, Ryo fastened his seatbelt. “What’re you waiting for? Let’s go!”
As Dee put the car in gear and pulled away, Ryo switched the radio on, classic rock filling the car. It was a perfect, sunny spring day, and he couldn’t think of anything better than getting out of New York, going somewhere the air was fresh and clean. Dee was right, it didn’t really matter where they went, as long as they were together.
They sang along to the radio as they left the city behind, turned off the interstate after a few miles, and stuck to the smaller roads, passing through a few small towns before deciding to stop for lunch.
Strolling along the main street from the parking lot, browsing shop windows as they looked for somewhere to eat, Ryo turned to smile at his lover.
“This was a great idea. We should do it more often. Living in the city, it’s easy to forget places like this exist.”
“Yeah, makes a welcome change of pace. Hey, look!” Dee pointed across the street to a small café advertising freshly baked pies, and Ryo laughed.
“Looks like we have a winner for lunch.”
“Never could resist pie,” Dee agreed.
Later that evening, driving home in the dark, Ryo thought back over the day. Planning activities was good, but sometimes doing something totally random was even better!
The End
