“According to witnesses, the suspect resides in this locale,” the uniformed officer informed the two detectives. He was young, still a rookie by the looks of him, and apparently not used to dealing with the men who investigated serious crimes, but he was doing his best to be efficient.
“This locale?” Dee smirked at the kid, who in truth was probably only five of six years younger. Dee himself had made detective at twenty-five, one of the youngest officers to do so. “Doesn’t narrow things down much, does it?”
“No, Sir, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t let Detective Laytner bother you,” Ryo told the younger man. “He’s just teasing, he doesn’t mean anything by it. Did the witnesses happen to indicate which direction the suspect was heading when he was last seen?”
“Uh, yes. That way. My training officer went after him, but I was told to stay with the body.”
“Did you touch anything?” Dee was crouched beside the man lying on the sidewalk, already reaching for his radio.
“No, Sir. Is there a problem?”
“Not for us, but maybe for the victim here. He’s still alive.” Then Dee was on the radio, calling dispatch for a bus. The sooner they got the victim in the hands of the paramedics, the better his chances of survival would be.
“No matter how bad things look,” Ryo told the rookie, “it’s still worth checking for a pulse. The human body can be remarkably resilient. If we’re lucky, he might know who attacked him.”
