“Gotta feel sorry for scarecrows,” Dee said, staring out the window as Ryo drove, heading back to New York from a few days in New England, enjoying the fall color.
“What? Why?” Ryo glanced away from the road for a moment, giving his lover a confused, incredulous look. “Where did that come from?” They hadn’t been talking about scarecrows, just grumbling to each other about having to be back at work in the morning.
Dee shrugged, sliding down further in the passenger seat. “Been passin’ a lot of scarecrows along this road. Got me thinkin’; as much as I don’t wanna go back to work, they got it worse than we do, standin’ out in their fields day after day, and all night too.”
“But they’re not alive, so it probably doesn’t bother them,” Ryo pointed out, grinning.
“Come to think of it, bein’ a cop ain’t all that different from bein’ a scarecrow.”
“How d’you work that out?”
“Think about it; we’re all guardians, in the business of scarin’ off the bad guys. They’re out in all weathers, just like us, tryin’ to protect their crops like we try to protect civilians. And the crows aren’t even scared of ‘em, just like the assholes we deal with aren’t scared of us. The scarecrows probably feel as jaded and disillusioned as we do a lot of the time.
“But we’re supposed to catch criminals and take them to court, not scare them.”
“But we’re supposed to be a deterrent.”
“And yet…” Ryo’s smile was wry and a little resigned.
“Yeah, but scarecrows don’t keep the crows away. Crows are too smart; they’ve got the scarecrows figured out.”
“And you think criminals have got the cops figured out too?”
“Some of ‘em, yeah.”
“That just means we need to be smarter.”
The End
