Summary: All sorts of things can escape from captivity.

“They’re not native to this planet,” the Doctor explained. “The colonists brought them with them as pets, but some of them escaped, or were abandoned when their owners got tired of them, and they mostly reverted to their wild state. Thankfully, they haven’t had much impact on the planet’s native wildlife.”
“What I don’t get,” said Ruby, “is why anyone would want to keep them as pets in the first place.”
They watched the feral five-inch-long pink slugs slithering about, occasionally being picked off by native birds.
The Doctor shrugged. “They’re apparently quite affectionate, if you don’t mind the slime.”
