The island is a strange place; there seems no way to even be sure exactly how big it is, and Varian has some doubts over whether its dimensions have any bearing on the amount of land they encompass. Sometimes he wonders if parts of it could exist as layer upon layer, overlapping each other in a manner that shouldn’t physically be possible…

What he and the others do know is that it’s made up of zones, each one a different time period, past, present, future, some of them inhabited by civilisations from various historical eras, others by people from other worlds. Some seem to have been settled by a mix of people from diverse cultures and different eras, who have worked together to create a new kind of civilisation that suits their requirements.

It brings to Varian’s mind the patchwork quilt passed down through generations of his family, only this one is made up of time zones rather than patterned fabric, and stitched together by technologies that even Jonathan can’t begin to understand. The gateways between zones undoubtedly exist, allowing people to pass through from one to the next, but exactly what they are and how they work remains a mystery.

Jonathan has suggested that perhaps the technology controlling the gateways might exist in another dimension. That possibly the entire island is made up of separate dimensions that exist fractionally out of phase with each other, prevented from drifting apart by forcefields of some description. He might be right, but Varian is a healer, not a scientist, and a lot of his friend’s theories go right over his head, no matter how hard he tries to follow Jonathan’s explanations.

One thing seems clear; if the island is on earth, then it exists out of step with the rest of reality.
