“You should eat, you know,” Willaway said, joining Varian where he was sitting, idly tossing small pebbles into a pond.

“I’m not hungry.” Varian didn’t even look at the older man.

“I know, but starving yourself isn’t going to change anything. Here.” Willaway held out one of the cups he was carrying. “It’s just tea. If you won’t eat, you should at least drink. Can’t have you getting dehydrated; you’re a healer, you should know better.”

With a resigned sigh, Varian nodded. “I do. Thank you.” Accepting the cup, he wrapped both hands around it, letting the warmth soak into cold fingers, and took a cautious sip.

Brushing some dust away, Willaway sat down on a rock. “I know you don’t feel like talking, and that’s fine. You don’t have to talk, but you can listen. I’m not going to tell you I know what you’re going through, because I don’t. None of us do, and if we’re very lucky, we never will. I’m not even going to tell you things will get better, although I certainly hope they will; that’s not a promise I can make. But I can tell you that you’re not alone. You have friends, and we care about you. We’re here for you, no matter what.”

“I know. I’m just… not very good company right now.” Varian finished his tea and sat staring into the empty cup.

“No one expects you to be.” Jonathan rested his hand on the other man’s shoulder, rubbing gently. “We understand that you need time, but I’m not sure isolating yourself from us is helping. All you’re doing out here in the dark is getting cold.”

“I’d be just as cold by the fire.”

“That’s because you’re not eating. Supper’s almost ready; it’s not much, but at least it’s hot.”
