It was good to be appreciated for the work he did, to know his efforts didn’t go unnoticed, but Ryo hadn’t chosen a career in law enforcement to get noticed, and definitely not to be lauded for doing his job. He always felt a bit embarrassed when something like this happened, but he could hardly refuse the honor. Nevertheless, there were times he wished he could be rewarded for his actions with nothing more than a thank you, and perhaps a handshake.
He would no doubt get both of those things, but first he had to sit through the ceremony, all done up in his dress blues, before being called to the stage to accept his commendation from the Chief of Police. Last time he’d received one, he’d still been in the hospital so there hadn’t been any rigmarole; he’d been handed the award in the Chief’s office, with the minimum of fuss, after he returned to duty.
This time, mostly uninjured, and because he’d been working a very high-profile case when he’d committed what the NYPD considered an act of heroism above and beyond the call of duty, he was expected to appear in person. The press would be there, he’d be photographed, applauded, a big fuss made…
He just wanted to hide.
He’d carried out his job to the best of his abilities, and yes, maybe he HAD risked his life in the process, but cops did things like that every day. Their profession could be dangerous; all police officers knew that going in.
Ryo barely heard what the Chief of Police had to say, just smiled and said, “Thank you, Sir,” as the commendation was pinned to the breast of his dress uniform, alongside all the others. Just one more shiny medal he’d have to keep polished.
The End
