The ringing of Dee’s phone brings the test drive to an abrupt halt, and while they’re still sitting on Ryo’s bed puzzling over the strange call, his bedroom door bursts open unexpectedly, the lock breaking. While Ryo is almost relieved at the interruption, Dee is clearly none too pleased, especially when he sees not just Bikky, who he was half expecting to show up anyway, but also JJ, who he definitely wasn’t expecting at all.
Nevertheless, finding that Carol has gone missing is enough to chill both of them to the bone. It’s entirely possible she’s been kidnapped by the weirdo who’s been snatching young girls off the street and then dumping their bodies a few days later, minus their right hands, in alleyways like so much trash. Any anger Dee might have felt evaporates instantly, replaced by fear. Carol is more than just Bikky’s best friend, she’s their Princess; everything else comes second to finding and saving her before anything worse than being abducted can happen. None of them want the bright, beautiful young girl to become the psychotic killer’s next victim.
They borrow one of the special surveillance vans from the precinct and JJ makes himself useful for once, using the equipment it contains to trace the phone call back to its point of origin. Even then it can only guide them to the general area, because they lose the signal; the battery of the phone Ryo loaned Carol has probably run out. That’s not as bad as it could be. At least now they have a place to start. Instead of a whole city to search, they only have a couple of blocks. Better yet, one of the buildings in their search area is a rundown apartment complex they visited earlier while investigating the series of killings, the one where they’d encountered a makeshift alarm system, and a seriously creepy dude in the hallway.
There’d been something off about that guy from the start, and now they feel almost certain; he has to be the killer. There’s just one minor problem; if they start going door to door it could take more time than Carol has, and if the guy suspects they’re onto him, he might simply kill her to avoid leaving a witness, then flee the scene.
“Do you remember what room he said he was in?” Dee asks.
Ryo thinks for a moment. “I’m pretty sure he’s in 502.”
“Sure hope you’re right, bud; we might only get one shot at this. You take the front; I’ll go in through the back.”
Ryo nods and as Dee leaves, heading for the rear of the building, he issues his own instructions. “JJ, you guard the main entryway. Bikky, you stay here with him.”
When it comes to work, JJ is a consummate professional. He all but snaps off a salute, saying crisply, “Got it.”
Bikky’s reply is less confident. He’s just a kid, and Carol is practically his girlfriend, but he nods and says, “Okay,” while looking up at Ryo beseechingly. The words he doesn’t say are right there in his eyes: Save her, please!
There turns out to be little need for all their planning though. Carol, brave, clever, resourceful girl that she is, suddenly appears at an upstairs window, somehow having managed to briefly escape from her captor. Dee is probably already on his way in, but it’s clear he’ll arrive too late to help her, and to Ryo’s horror, Carol climbs out onto the window ledge, three floors up, calling down to him to catch her.
It’s a totally insane thing for her to do; if he misses, she’ll be falling to possible death, or at the very least serious injury. But if she stays where she is she’s likely to be killed anyway, so it probably makes more sense to her to take the risk and place her life, literally, in the hands of someone she trusts implicitly.
As she plummets towards him, Ryo reaches out, desperately grabbing for her, and she lands in his outstretched arms. Her sudden weight pitches him painfully onto his ass on the sidewalk, but he barely feels the impact. All that matters in that moment is that Carol’s alive, and although badly beaten by her captor, she’s at least unharmed from the fall.
By the time Ryo disentangles himself and leaves the badly shaken girl in Bikky’s capable hands, with Ryo’s jacket to wrap her in, Dee has already dealt with the killer, which basically means he’s beaten the psycho to an almost unrecognisable pulp. Dee claims it was self-defence, but they both know the truth; it was payback for hurting Carol and killing all those other innocent girls. Ryo isn’t about to criticise Dee’s methods though, not this time; he probably would have been tempted to do the same in his partner’s place.
What’s done is done; all that matters now is that Carol will be okay, and the man responsible for almost a dozen deaths will soon be behind bars, where he belongs. It may not have been the evening Dee had been hoping for, and he still wants that test drive, but it feels pretty damned good to get that sick bastard off the street.
All in all, it’s been a good night’s work.
