The island’s climate varied so much between zones that weather was unpredictable. Some days they were blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine and gently cooling breezes, others they were faced with rain, anything from a light drizzle to a torrential downpour, sometimes accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gales. More than once the travellers had holed up in caves for a day or two, sheltering from the worst of the weather, waiting for it to clear so that they could continue their journey.

This morning had been cloudy, a bit on the chilly side, but at least it was dry, so they’d left their previous night’s camp in a small copse of trees, setting out towards the east and the next gateway between zones, hoping the weather there would be more pleasant. The path had led them steadily uphill, however, and by midmorning they’d found themselves surrounded by a thickening mist.

“Maybe we should have stayed where we were.” Willaway drew closer to his friends, not wanting to get separated from them.

“There’s no point in turning back,” Varian said. “It might always be like this here. We’ll be better off if we keep going. We should pass into the next zone by midafternoon.”

“If we can find it.”

“Here we go again,” Fred teased. “Our resident pessimist dishing out the doom and gloom.”

“This isn’t so bad,” Scott said. “The last time there was mist was in the swamp, and that was WAY worse.”

“We’ll be fine as long as we stay close together and no one wanders off. The mist isn’t so thick that we can’t see where we’re going.” At least Varian sounded confident.

“It’s what we can’t see that worries me.” Willaway looked around himself nervously.

Grinning, Fred slapped him on the shoulder. “I’ll protect you.”

“Oh, that’s reassuring!”
