Thinking back, Ryo realised he could no longer remember why he’d tried so hard to convince himself that he was straight, why he’d been so determined to deny that he was attracted to Dee, or what he’d been so afraid of… He supposed he must have had his reasons, but what they’d been, he had no idea.
Could it really have been nothing more than fearing to be seen as different? Okay, so he didn’t recall having any friends growing up who were gay, bi, or whatever, not that he knew about anyway, but still… That shouldn’t have made him so resistant to the possibility that he simply wasn’t interested in girls the way his friends were.
And yes, he’d had to deal with a certain amount of homophobia directed against him since he came out, but most of it had been no worse than what he got hurled at him for being a cop, which was nothing he couldn’t handle.
“You okay, babe?”
“Hm?” Ryo looked up at his lover. “Yes, I’m fine, just… remembering what a fool I was, trying to convince myself I was straight. No one should have to be afraid to be who they are.”
The End
