“Wake up!” Dee whispered as he shook Ryo, then shook his lover harder. “Ryo!”
“What?” Ryo grumbled, rolling over in their sleeping bag.
“Shhhh!” Dee hissed, eyes wide in the darkness inside their tent. “I heard something!”
“What sort of something?” Ryo was more awake now and kept his voice low.
“I don’t know! Gruntin’, maybe, and snufflin’…” Dee trailed off, listening as the sounds continued. Ryo noted that his lover had his gun in hand.
“Put that away, Dee. This isn’t hunting season!”
“But something’s out there!” Dee had been camping with Ryo several times now, but he still wasn’t exactly accustomed to the sounds of the forest at night. “What if it’s a mountain lion or something?”
“All the more reason to stay inside the tent,” Ryo assured his partner. “But I doubt it’s that.” He listened intently for a few moments. “Probably raccoons, or a porcupine, and you don’t want to get too close to one of those. I’d rather not have to cut this trip short because you got yourself stuck full of quills. Go back to sleep. Whatever’s out there will stay out there.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Now shut up go back to sleep.”
