Meriel was in floods of tears when Jack arrived home from work. He took one look at his sobbing daughter, then turned to his husband for an explanation.
“What happened to Meri? Is she alright?” It was obviously no use asking his little girl. Not that Meriel was so little anymore.
Ianto shrugged, smiling helplessly. “Apparently she’s happy.”
“Happy?” Jack’s eyebrows did a confused little dance. It was quite expressive; they must have been taking lessons from Ianto’s eyebrows.
Meriel nodded through her tears, scrambling off the sofa, where she’d been sitting, crying into Nosy’s fur, and throwing herself into her daddy’s arms, hugging him tightly with one arm while waving a piece of paper with the other hand.
Jack took the hint and accepted the letter, reading through it quickly: It was her acceptance to her top choice of university, the one she hadn’t thought she’d get into.
“Meriel this is wonderful!” Jack beamed down at the top of his daughter’s head. She nodded against his chest. “Congratulations!”
Peeling herself off her father, Meriel returned to her position on the sofa, hugging Nosy. Yes, she was thrilled, but it would mean leaving home, and worse, leaving her best friend.
