It’s hard to admit, and even harder to accept, but Jack O’Neill’s knees are no longer what they once were. Too long in the military, too many injuries, too much wear and tear… Oh, he does what he can to keep all his joints in a reasonable state of repair, but he’s not getting any younger. It smarts that Teal’c is so much older than him and yet so much fitter. As for Sam and Daniel…
Leaping the stream crossing their path like it’s nothing, his teammates land on the other side with an agility O’Neill is already sure he can’t match, which sucks. Worse, if he attempts the leap himself and lands badly on the uneven, muddy far bank, there’s every possibility that he might damage something and put the entire mission in jeopardy.
Okay, so they’re not doing anything of immediate importance, just taking a look to see if there’s anything of interest here, which so far there hasn’t been because this planet doesn’t even appear to be inhabited. But what if they have to run for their lives, back to the ‘gate, and he isn’t able to run because he’s busted his damn knee? Some things aren’t worth the risk.
“Sir?” says Carter.
“I’ll… just stay on this side for now,” O’Neill decides. Maybe there’ll be an easier crossing point further upstream; stepping stones, or a bridge, something that will be less of a risk.
Daniel leaps nimbly back across, the show-off, and Jack’s just about to say something, but Doc Jackson beats him to it.
“That’s probably a good idea, we can follow the stream, explore both sides, cover more ground that way. Any traces of civilisation are more likely to be found close to a water source anyway.”
O’Neill nods. “Exactly what I was thinking.”
The End
