Being an adult was hard. Buffy had felt way too young to take on adult responsibilities when her mom had died, but she’d had Dawn to think of, so she’d done the best she could, taking on a parental role, raising her sister…
But she hadn’t been alone. She’d had her friends around her, and she’d had Giles to lean on, and that had made all the difference. No matter how hard it had been, she’d had someone older and wiser to turn to for advice. Giles had always been more than just her Watcher; he’d been there for her more than her dad had been. Not that she’d loved her dad any less for that, but… Giles had understood her better.
Nothing had been the same since he’d told her she didn’t need a Watcher any longer. Maybe he’d been right, and she’d outgrown that particular need, had come into her own as the Slayer, but she’d still needed her friend. He hadn’t abandoned her completely; they’d kept in touch over the years, with phone calls, cards and letters, emails, visits, but now… How was she supposed to deal with this, without Giles to turn to?
“I miss you.”
