Even now that the complete antidote to the poison had been administered, Scott was too weak from the poison’s effects to travel. It would take him a day or two to recover, which left the travellers in a slightly precarious position. They were guests now rather than prisoners, having done everything they could to help Halyana by shutting down the Complex and disabling the robotic watchers, but while Halyana and her women were more kindly disposed to them than they had been, the men of Coriel were an unknown quantity.
There was nothing that could be done about that, however. Halyana and Morgan and their followers would have to figure out for themselves how to get along in a fairer manner than they had thus far, although Liana had offered to help them organise a new government under which men and women would live as equals. In the meantime, Fred was arranging to move Scott somewhere more comfortable than the cells, bearing in mind that he should be moved as little as possible…
Varian was pulled out of his thoughts as a hand touched his arm, and he blinked, looking down into Jonathan’s concerned face.
“Where are you going? Our room is down this way.”
“Right, sorry, I was…” Varian shook his head.
“Miles away, I know.” Taking Varian by the arm, Jonathan steered him along a side corridor to the room they’d all been staying in, and pushed him down onto to edge of the nearest bed. “Are you alright?”
“I’ll be fine.” Varian managed a weak smile.
“That’s not what I asked. I saw what the poison did to you, and I know you took on as much of Scott’s suffering as you were physically able to.”
“And the antidote has taken care of that.”
“Liar. You’re about dead on your feet; I’m guessing you used the last of your energy dealing with the watchers. You need rest as much as Scott does, maybe more, since he’s at least been getting some for the last few hours, while you’ve just kept on going. You’re not inexhaustible.”
“I know.”
“And we won’t be going anywhere until Scott is well enough to travel, so now is the perfect opportunity for you to get some sleep.”
Varian sighed. “Maybe you’re right.”
“There’s no ‘maybe’ about it. Shoes off and lie down. I’ll keep an eye on things.”
“Thank you, Jonathan.”
“Anytime.”
