They sat around the table in the restaurant, the five of them lingering past the end of their main course, debating the merits of various possible desserts. As celebratory meals went, Ryo judged it a success; this had been one of Dee’s better ideas.


He sat beside his husband at one side of the table, Bikky and Carol across from them and Carol’s aunt at one end. As the waiter took their dessert orders and left, Ryo smiled across at Carol and raised his glass; they’d ordered sparking apple juice all round, to be fair to everybody. Carol’s aunt didn’t drink, Bikky was underage, Dee was the designated driver, and Carol was expecting, so ordering one glass of wine for himself had seemed pointless. Besides, the apple juice was refreshing.


“A toast, to Carol and Bikky!” The other four raised their glasses, clinking them together. “Congratulations, both of you. I know the timing isn’t ideal, but we’re behind you all the way, so don’t worry. Everything will work itself out. You’ll both be wonderful parents.”


“You really think so?” Bikky asked, still nervous at the prospect of becoming a father.


“No doubt about it,” Dee agreed. “You’re gonna do fine.”
