Ryo and Dee were used to sharing the squad room with their colleagues in the Serious Crimes Unit. Even after the two-seven’s stationhouse had been reduced to rubble and they’d had to move into the Bronx Precinct while waiting for their new home to be ready, the situation had remained the same. They’d gotten the top floor and about half the floor below, which had made things a bit cramped, but they’d known it wouldn’t be forever, so they’d coped well enough.

Now here they were in their new premises, not the new build they’d been promised but the old 19th Precinct, and while most of the SCU would once again be sharing the bullpen, to Dee and Ryo’s surprise, they’d been assigned their own office. It even had a window to the outside world.

Ryo had thought that would make Dee happy, an enclosed space that, when the door was shut and the blinds drawn, no one could see into. Perfect for when he wanted to nap at his desk.

Dee, of course, was more upset at not getting the brand-new building they’d been promised, all fresh paint and shiny furniture. He’d been looking forward to breaking everything in, and instead they were stuck with other people’s cast-offs again. Ryo wondered vaguely how much effort it took to always see the downside of everything. He hadn’t thought of his partner as particularly pessimistic, not like Drake, the squad’s resident purveyor of doom and gloom, but today Dee seemed intent on dragging everyone’s mood down.

Well, Ryo refused to be affected. So what if their office had cracked plaster on the walls and drab paintwork? It was theirs, a private space away from their rowdy colleagues where they could work without being interrupted. He liked it, even if Dee didn’t.
