Getting involved in a shootout was never ideal; there was always the risk of hitting innocent bystanders. Most of the time, being a cop wasn’t like the movies, with endless exchanges of gunfire, and people ducking for cover behind walls, and cars, and dumpsters, or in recessed doorways, but… Occasionally, it was exactly like that, whether the police involved wanted it that way or not.
To be honest, the police NEVER wanted it that way, it was just that criminals, when cornered, would always try to shoot their way out, provided they had guns and ammunition, and the longer the criminals kept firing, the greater the chance of them hitting someone. That meant the cops were practically obligated to shoot back, hoping to take the criminals down before the civilian casualties could start piling up.
Drug dealers these days were at least as well-armed as the police, but arms dealers usually had access to even more powerful weapons. Thankfully, this bunch were neither dealing in drugs, nor weapons; they were your garden variety thugs, holding up liquor stores, and this time they’d been caught in the act thanks to a passerby seeing what was happening and phoning the police.
Dee and Ryo had been investigating the recent spate of robberies, so when the report had come over their radios while they were only a few blocks away, they’d headed straight for the scene, where uniformed officers were huddled behind their car, one of them still exchanging fire with the would-be robbers, keeping them pinned down, the other injured.
“How is he?” Ryo asked, taking up position himself and wishing he had his sniper rifle with him.
“Bullet just winged him,” Dee reported. “Would be nice to end this without anyone else gettin’ hurt, or worse.”
“Working on it. I need a better angle though.”
“I’ll cover ya.”
It was dangerous to move from the cover provided by their unmarked vehicle and the patrol car, but with Dee and the uniformed officer laying down covering fire, Ryo was able to make his way to a better vantage point. After that… Well, it wasn’t exactly like shooting fish in a barrel, but Ryo’s first shot took the nearest of the three robbers through the right shoulder, and before the others could react, the second was down with a bullet through the thigh. The third sensibly surrendered.
They’d all survive to stand trial.
The End
