In his hundreds of years of life, and his several incarnations, the Doctor has gradually collected a vast storehouse of knowledge. It’s entirely possible that he knows more about the universe throughout time than any other living being, and what he knows, he’s learned firsthand, rather than through books of history, astronomy, and such.
 

He's travelled to so many worlds, and so many time periods, he knows details that would never be considered significant enough to write down, and yet he’s still barely scratched the surface. There’s so much more to know.

 
So he travels, gleaning knowledge as he goes.
