Parenthood was strange. Ianto had known his life would change dramatically with the birth of his daughter, but even so, he hadn’t quite expected experiences like this. The laundry room on the floor below their flat was getting a lot of use, so much so that he’d tucked a desk with a laptop on it into an unused corner, beside the big chest freezer that lived there, along with two washing machines and two driers.
With two adults and a baby, laundry was practically an everyday chore. Ianto loaded the two machines, one with his and Jack’s clothes, the other with Meriel’s, since they needed to be on a different setting. Then he turned them on, checked his daughter in her bouncy seat, and turned the laptop on, letting the sound of the washers soothe the baby to sleep.
Browsing the internet, and emailing back and forth with Jack passed the time until the machines hit the spin cycle. Turning the laptop off, Ianto spun his chair to watch the laundry spinning around; it was almost hypnotic, and he let his mind wander until it was time to transfer everything into the driers. Laundry could be more relaxing than meditation.
