It had been impulsive, true, but a good impulse nonetheless, even Ryo had to admit that. New York was laboring under snow and ice storms, some of the worst either he or his partner had seen in years, and the relentless cold had been getting them both down, so when Dee had suggested putting in for some personal days and digging into their savings to take off to warmer climes for a few days, Ryo hadn’t put up more than a token protest.
Besides, they had the money from the last classic car they’d restored; the check they’d received in payment had cleared, and although they were actively looking for their next project, that didn’t mean they had to leave the money just sitting around. Yes, it would have gained interest if left where it was, but right now they’d decided their physical and mental health was more important than a few more dollars in the bank.
So here they were, having managed to book a last-minute getaway at what amounted to a bargain price, and yes, it was only Florida, not the Caribbean, a moderately priced resort in Key Largo, but that was more than good enough for a week away from the snow and ice that had been making them thoroughly miserable.
The prospect of having to go back to the wintry weather at the end of their stay wasn’t appealing, but they still had a few days before they had to go home, and they were going to make the most of every second until they had to leave for the airport. At this point, Ryo was even wondering if they could get away with conveniently missing their flight, so they’d have to stay an extra day… Even though he was usually a stickler for following the rules, he would be totally okay with that.
“You gotta admit this was a great idea of mine,” Dee said, lounging beside his lover on the adjacent pool chair.
“Mm, yes, you do occasionally have flashes of inspiration.” Ryo grinned at his partner to show that he was only teasing.
The longer they’d known each other, the more he’d come to appreciate Dee’s spontaneity. While the ability to plan ahead was a quality Ryo appreciated in himself, there had often been times he’d wished he could be more impetuous, do things on the spur of the moment, just because they seemed like a good idea. With Dee’s guidance he was gradually learning to let go, follow his lover’s lead, and do what felt right in the moment. Which, after all, was how they’d wound up here.
With the sun warming him, making his feel deliciously relaxed and drowsy, Ryo was quite happy to lounge beside the pool all day, with the occasional refreshing dip, feeling no urge to go anywhere or do anything in order to make productive use of his time the way he usually did, because… Well, wasn’t resting and relaxing in the sun a productive use of time? He and Dee had been working hard over the last three months; they deserved a break, and that didn’t have to mean finding something else to do to keep them busy.
Even the book Ryo had brought down to the pool, half-read, was lying unopened on the small table beside the pool chair, and the only things on his mind were the warmth of the sun on his bare back and legs, the occasional soft brush of a breeze against his skin, the shouts and laughter of the people in the pool… He felt pleasantly lazy, content to bask like a cat.
Opening his eyes, he looked across at Dee, also lounging face down, grinning lazily at him, his green eyes so bright in the sunlight they reminded Ryo of traffic signals, green for go. That seemed absurdly fitting for a man who was up for just about anything, anytime, anywhere.
“I’m glad you talked me into this.” Although, to be fair, Ryo hadn’t taken much convincing. The thought of sunshine and blue skies had been more than enough to tip the balance in favor of Dee’s suggestion.
“Wanna swim?”
“In a bit, maybe. Right now, I don’t even want to move. This is perfect.”
The best part was, they still had five more days to do whatever they wanted, or to do nothing at all. What could be better?
The End
