Time has lost meaning. Daniel has no idea how long he’s been sitting here, learning from the… priest, he supposes, or perhaps monk would be a better term. It’s fascinating, and if he can learn enough, perhaps he’ll be allowed to take Sha-re’s child back to earth with him. Compared to reaching a suitable level of enlightenment, the passing of time doesn’t seem important anymore.
It's perfectly understandable that Oma Desala isn’t going to simply hand him the child, not until she knows Daniel will be capable of protecting him, and he’ll do whatever he has to, prove himself in any way he’s asked to. He just needs to… open his mind. Which he’s trying very hard to do, and he thinks he’s making progress. Lighting a candle with his mind though, that’s… complicated.
All he has to do is trust, believe not that he can do it, but that Oma Desala can, which actually might not be so hard to believe. Mother Nature.
It’s a shock when Jack blunders in, interrupting them, and Daniel feels of twinge of guilt. He’d forgotten Jack was waiting, and the colonel isn’t the most patient man Daniel’s ever met. Saying ‘Sorry, I lost track of time’ probably isn’t going to satisfy him, even though Daniel is trying to achieve what they came here to do, retrieve the baby. Okay, his methods might not be what Jack would choose, but why should that matter if they work?
The power of the mind. It’s incredible!
