A/N: Double drabble.
With his birth parents out of the picture, their identities unknown, young Dee had looked elsewhere for a role model, and had found what he was looking for in the shape of Jess Latener, the cop who had found a baby abandoned in an alleyway, taken him to an orphanage, and cared enough to be there throughout his childhood.
Jess had been, in a way, the foundation that Dee had built his life on. As much as he’d adored Mother Maria Lane, and still did, it was Jess he’d turned to for advice, Jess who’d taken him out on his birthday, brought him ice cream, given him a few dollars here and there. Jess, who’d taught Dee so much about the kind of man he wanted to be. Jess, who’d impressed on him the importance of being honest and helping others.
Jess, who had, in the end, let him down by crossing the line, becoming a dirty cop. And yet, despite that, Dee still held true to the lessons Jess had taught him, the most important of those being not to compromise his own integrity. Jess may have failed at that, but Dee would learn from his surrogate father’s mistakes.
