It was strange the way things had worked out, Willaway thought. Who could have guessed that one of the worst and most selfish acts he’d ever committed, something he remained deeply ashamed about despite the fact that he’d long since been forgiven for the whole sorry mess, would have resulted in what he could only describe as riches beyond measure?
He’d been so lonely with nothing but androids for company, and the power and control he’d had over his ‘family’ had turned him into someone he’d scarcely recognised, and yet… Along had come these people, and one among them had somehow seen past all the falsity to the dissatisfaction and emptiness within, and offered him a chance to redeem himself.
Now here he was, part of something greater than himself, travelling with these people who had given him their friendship, on an extraordinary quest to find their way home to their own times.
Oh, the journey wasn’t all fun and games. It was fraught with unknown and unanticipated dangers, they were often tired, cold, hot, footsore, or hungry, and sleeping most nights on the unforgiving lumpy ground with only their thin bedrolls and a small campfire for warmth was hardly luxury. The occasional night spent in an actual bed was sheer bliss in comparison, but still, the discomforts were made bearable because of the company.
Willaway had next to nothing in common with any of these people, they came from different times, different worlds, and yet a bond had formed between the five of them unlike anything he’d ever known before.
“What’re you grinnin’ for?” Fred asked, nudging him with an elbow.
If anything, Willaway’s grin grew wider. “I’m happy. Is that a crime now?”
“Happy? That makes a change.”
“I feel extraordinarily lucky to have found such good friends.”
