Scott had always enjoyed adventures, going places with his dad, not just on picnics, or hiking, or riding, but going with him where possible on his research trips. Being a marine biologist meant that Dr Paul Jordan got to travel all over the world, and sometimes, if it was in the summer, Scott got to go too.
He’d been so happy, aboard Ben’s boat, but then the shipwreck had left them stranded on this island, and his dad had found a way home, expecting Scott to follow in a day or so… But everything had gone wrong, and now here he was, travelling on foot, across an island that shouldn’t exist, accompanied by people from different time periods.
It was the biggest adventure he’d ever been on, and he liked the people he was with. He was learning so much! But at the same time, he wished his dad was there too. Not because he didn’t feel safe with Varian and Fred, but because it kind of didn’t seem fair for him to be seeing things his dad would never get to see.
“How far d’you think it is to Evoland?”
Varian smiled down at him, shaking his head. “I don’t know, Scott, I couldn’t begin to guess. It could be the next zone, or still hundreds of miles away. There doesn’t seem to be any pattern to the zones, any way of choosing the shortest route. All we can do is keep walking east until we get there.”
“I know I want to get home to mom and dad, but… I hope we don’t find the portal too soon. I’d kind of like to see a bit more first.”
“Even with all the dangers?” Willaway asked.
Scott grinned. “Yeah. I mean, sometimes it’s scary, but it sure is fun.”
