The trouble with making plans regarding the best way to deal with whatever the Rift had chosen to throw at Torchwood on any given day was that, generally speaking, whatever they were dealing with tended not to know or understand how the plan was supposed to work, and as a result, often failed to cooperate.

That was basically where the team were at today. They’d had a plan, one they’d naively believed would cover all contingencies, because despite long experience they somehow managed to remain optimistic, but as so often happened when aliens were involved, everything had still managed to go tits up.

“I thought you said your plan was foolproof,” Ianto muttered, picking himself up off the ground and dusting himself off.

“It was!” Jack glared accusingly after the fleeing alien, as though blaming it for not doing what was expected of it.

“Maybe you should’ve told the… whatever it is,” Owen suggested.

“What do we do now?” Tosh turned to their fearless leader, waiting for him to come up with another, better plan, one that would surely succeed. She was destined to be disappointed.

Jack shrugged. “The plan didn’t work, so I suppose we’ll have to wing it.”

As with most plans, they survive only so long as they don't come into contact with any living being (human, animal or alien).
