The tide was out, the estuary laid bare, an all-you-can-eat buffet for the wading birds that came in flocks to poke around in the mud. From the door of the TARDIS, the Doctor watched them; for every habitat, there was a lifeform, or usually several, evolved to live there. These tidal flats, abandoned when they were underwater, were a riot of life when the water receded.
 

It made him wonder, though, about his own natural habitat. Where exactly did he belong in the grand scheme of the universe?
 

Maybe there was no single place he belonged. Everywhere was his home.
