One night, that was all they’d had together, a single night after the first ceremony and before the second, the Rite of Unification, the rite that was supposed to bind Varian and Gwenith together for all time.
A single night, which Varian had believed would be the first of many spent with his new wife, the beginning of their life together, but which Gwenith had known would be their one and only. A night that she alone would remember once Varian was cast into the flames to appease her people’s volcano god.
But now Gwenith was gone, she’d thrown herself into the fire to save his life and all Varian had left was the memory of the time he’d known her; hardly more than a day, and that one night. How could it all have happened so fast? He’d dreamed of her, found her, known in that instant of meeting that they were a perfect fit for each other, known that he wanted nothing more than to be with her forever. Nothing had ever felt more natural. She’d been like a part of him he’d never known was missing until he’d found her.
Found, and lost, far too soon, all because of superstition, but what was done could not be undone. If he had died and Gwenith had lived, she would have had nothing but the memory of him to cling to as the years passed. But Varian had more than that. He had her memory, yes, but he wasn’t alone. He had his friends, and a purpose: to do what he’d set out to do in the first place, guide them across the island to Evoland, to the portal that would return them all to their own times.
But he would carry Gwenith’s memory with him, for all time.
