A/N: Double drabble.
Buffy can remember EVERYTHING about growing up with her kid sister, all the annoyances, the sibling squabbles, having to share her toys with Dawn, the birthday parties, the fun times… She clearly remembers her parents coming home with the new baby, introducing her to her sister, it’s all right THERE, and yet none of it is real.
Dawn remembers too. If she didn’t, then maybe she wouldn’t be so good at being an obnoxious little brat, but even that isn’t really Dawn’s fault. It’s the way she’s been designed, for realism, which Buffy supposes means the monks did a really great job of making her human. She’s an authentic pain in the ass kid sister in every respect, and even though she is enough to drive Buffy up the wall, around the bend, whatever, Buffy can’t help but be protective of her.
It doesn’t matter that the memories are false, doesn’t matter that Dawn was, until fairly recently, a thing rather than a person, some kind of key. All that matters anymore is what she is NOW, a pre-teen girl who is, despite everything, Buffy’s sister, her flesh and blood family. Whatever else may be true, she needs Buffy’s protection.
