“Lost?” Ryo looked at his lover. “How can we be lost?”
“I don’t know! We’re just… not where we’re supposed to be. Not accordin’ to this map, anyway.”
“Maybe you’re reading it wrong.”
“Yeah, thanks for the vote of confidence.” Dee scowled. “We musta taken a wrong turn somewhere, but damned if I know where. There aren’t so many roads around here anyway, so how’d we end up on the wrong one?”
“I don’t know.” Ryo put the car in park and took the map from his partner, looking at it, then at their surroundings, which were basically endless miles of fields in every direction. “We have two choices. We can keep following the road we’re on and see where we end up, or we could turn around, go back the way we came, and see if we can find somewhere we recognise.”
“Or a road sign,” Dee added. “A road sign would be a big help. What do the people around here have against road signs?”
“What people?” Ryo gestured at the surrounding emptiness.
“Good point. The rate we’re goin’, we’ll be lucky to find our hotel.”
“I’d be happy just to find a town.”
“Gotta be one somewhere!”
