Disclaimer: I don’t own Doctor Who, or the characters.
The scope of the universe is beyond anything a single person, no matter how advanced the civilisation they’re from, can fully grasp. It might as well be considered infinite, because not even Time Lords, with their affinity for timelines, their ability to see both the past and the future of everything that exists or ever has existed, can hold the entirety of it in their minds. They can only see bits and pieces of the whole, enough to detect where things have gone wrong, where this timeline or that one has slipped off track and needs to be put right again.
Of course, now there is only one Time Lord trying to keep order in the immensity of space and time, and that is quite a responsibility, although the Doctor is confident that he can handle anything that comes his way. After all, he’s brilliant! He’s also very experienced, since he’s been travelling the universe for centuries, and has explored countless time periods on countless planets, keeping space and time running smoothly.
He’s seen countless wonders, righted countless wrongs, explored countless mysteries, although even after so long he knows he’s still only scratched the surface. He’s made amazing discoveries, mourned tragic and unpreventable disasters, because some things have to happen no matter how much they break his hearts. He’s lived through some of the greatest moments in history, both on earth and on more other worlds than he can clearly remember, and although there is still so much he hasn’t seen yet, one thing he’s learned is that all myths are true, in some place and at some time, even if they’re true in unexpected and unfathomable ways.
Because myths, by their very nature, have their basis in fact, just as legends do, and beings of all shapes, sizes, and sensibilities have been travelling to other worlds almost since the beginning of time. Knowing that, it’s only natural that many have had an impact on the places they’ve been, whether intentionally or through random quirks of chance, or fate.
Rifts in time and space exist throughout the universe; some are fixed and permanent, their ends firmly anchored to connect two times, or two worlds. Some might have one end anchored in a particular place while the other roams throughout the universe, snatching objects and living beings willy-nilly. Still others might come into existence and last only for a relatively short period of time before dissipating, gone as unexpectedly as they appeared, leaving no trace of themselves behind. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that such Rifts are the logical explanation for many bizarre sightings of strange creatures on worlds where they do not belong, and could never have evolved naturally.
Werewolves, vampires, fairies, witches, goblins, ghouls, pixies, rakshasa, pooka, mermaids, dragons, unicorns, sphinxes, gryphons, ogres, centaurs, and every other mythological creature or monster ever conjured up in the mind of a sentient being exists, or did at one time, somewhere in the still largely uncharted depths of the universe. Really, it should come as no surprise to anyone; life, in all its infinite and extraordinary variations, is what makes the universe such a fascinating place. Wherever life evolves, it finds a way to survive.
