This island is proving a far crueller place than Varian would have believed possible, even after his ordeal at the hands of the privateers, an ordeal that had made it clear to him that he was no longer in the world he knew. He’s already lost his new bride, less than a day after their wedding, and he is determined that he will not lose anyone else he cares about.
He refuses to leave Jonathan to his fate, because despite Apollonius insisting that Jonathan Willaway is no more, Varian can still sense him. His spirit is huddled deep inside the body Apollonius now inhabits, forced down into the smallest, darkest corner of his own mind; a second, far weaker set of alpha waves, just barely detectable but not yet snuffed out.
Jonathan can still be saved; weak though he is, he’s still fighting for survival, and Varian would not abandon anyone to such an unwarranted fate, least of all a dear friend who has been there for him, offering his steadfast support, throughout Varian’s grief over Gwenith’s death. No matter the cost to himself, Varian will not give up until he’s forced Apollonius out of his friend’s body and mind.
