“What’s for dinner?” Dee came bounding into Ryo’s apartment, Bikky and Carol in tow, all three with faces flushed from the winter cold. “Whatever it is, it sure smells good.”
Ryo would have liked to be outside with them, but having sprained his knee on a patch of ice the day before, he was stuck indoors in order to avoid making it worse. So much for having fun with Dee and the kids over his long weekend off.
On the plus side, it had given him the opportunity to try out some new recipes. He turned from the stove. “I’ve made a toad in the hole, I thought you’d all need something hot and filling after a couple of hours in the snow.”
Bikky and Dee exchanged identical horrified looks, but it was Bikky who spoke. “Toad? You expect us to eat toads now?”
Carol giggled. “It’s not made with real toads, silly! Right, Ryo?”
“Right.” Ryo was grinning. “The looks on your faces! I picked up the recipe in England; it’s sausages in a sort of batter nest.”
“Sausages? Thank God!” Dee’s shoulders sagged with relief. “Why don’t they just call it that then? The British are seriously weird.”
